Film Review of Nothing But the Truth

A movie about a journalist who goes through hell on earth to keep her source a secret, Nothing But the Truth embodies just exactly how horrible it can be for a person trapped between the unjust parts of the judicial system and their own morals.

Not just a film that makes moviegoers root for the protagonist, Rachel Armstrong (Kate Beckinsale), a journalist doing everything to protect her source, the opposition is easily put in a bad light. Ray Armstrong (David Schwimmer), Rachel's unfaithful husband, a whiny, incompetent human being who has no spine whatsoever, makes viewers foam at the mouth just watching his pathetic attempt as a family man. Patton Dubois (Matt Dillon), the prosecutor, is goes lower than the pond scum to prosecute Rachel as he disregards completely who she is as a person.

The passion is real, the consequences are fatal and the plot twist near the end of the movie leaves you feeling as if you were absolutely caught off guard.

The film begs you to ask yourself the question: How far would you be willing to go to protect your source?

In hind sight, Rachel did what she had to. Because of who the source was (no spoilers), it seems she is actually left with no choice. But would she rat out her source if it was anyone else? I think so.

What she did to her family was, on some levels, appalling. I don't think I would be able to do that to a young child or my spouse. The repercussions seem like they could be avoided to some extent, leaving the audience a bit confused and irritated with her. The other point: why even write the article when she fully understood what was going to happen? You could tell that, from the start, Rachel was worried and accepting of what seemed inevitable to happen.
